Now it finally started. After a spontaneous short trip to Chicago at the end of June, I'm now heading to Colorado for my original vacation.
The start and end point is Denver. From here I start a round trip through the Rocky Mountains, former silver and gold towns and visit Pikes Peak.
After the flight in Frankfurt was delayed by almost an hour (they took longer than expected to clean the plane...), we still landed in Denver a good 30 minutes late despite flying half an hour
faster. It's a good thing that the rental car is waiting for you even if you're late.
Fortunately, immigration went very quickly. It didn't even take me a minute. But that was only possible because I tried the MPC this time.
I was only asked if I had anything to declare, then got a card with an “E” on it and was able to go to baggage claim. Unfortunately, it took a very long time for my suitcase to arrive. Now I just
had to hand in the card at the exit and off to the rental car shuttle. Incidentally, they were walking around with a dog and let it sniff all the bags etc., the first time I've ever experienced
that.
At the rental car counter, the employee tried to sell me a few things again: higher class, towing service, toll device.... Always nicely denied. This time I was also assigned a car straight away.
So I couldn't choose. I rented from Dollar and got a Chevrolet Malibu. Like the last 2 years, I had speculated on a Dodge Charger. But... yeah... :D A Malibu like that has already taken me all
over the USA in 2022 and they're actually pretty cool.
Due to all the delays, I arrived at the hotel at 6:30 pm, checked in and picked up some food at Target.
Day 2
Today, after a very short night (awake at 1:30 am...) I started quite early. To Denver at 7am to the Federal Mint. Breakfast was served from 6am. But it was nothing special. Selection was ok
(cereal, waffles, toast, egg, hashbrowns). I only ate some egg and hashbrowns. But it was damn cool this morning. About 17 °C (64 °F). It was already getting quite chilly last night.
The Denver Mint is quite well located. Near downtown by the Civic Center. At this early hour there was still plenty of free parking. Right next to it is an open parking lot, $17 for the whole
day.
The guided tours at the Mint are free of charge. However, you have to pick up a ticket with the desired time at the information desk beforehand. The first tour starts at 7:30 am. You are only
allowed to take a wallet and a switched-off cell phone into the Mint. Bags, even fanny packs, are not allowed. So unfortunately there are no pictures of the inside. You also have to go through a
scanner here, just like at the airport. But you have to remove everything metallic, even your belt.
The tour itself takes about 45 minutes. You can see how the coins are produced and minted and learn a lot about the history of the means of payment itself as well as directly about the
Mint.
After the rather interesting tour, I walked past the State Capitol on my way to the Colorado History Center (yes, some culture is a must). Here on the 15th step is the so-called Mile High Marker.
Denver is also known as the Mile High City. This marker is located exactly one mile (1.6 km) above sea level. If you want, you can also take a free tour of the State Capitol (including a security
check etc.). But I didn't feel like doing that.
So I continued on to the History Center. Here, as the name suggests, you can learn all about Colorado's history. Among other things, how the city came into being, but also the terrible events
that led to the banishment and murder of almost all the indigenous people.
But the museum is also a great interactive place for school-age children.
Nevertheless, I was out again after an hour, as there weren't too many people here today.
I then headed downtown to 16th Mall Street. This is a street that has been converted into a pedestrian zone with lots of stores, souvenir stores and restaurants to the left and right. At the end
is Central Station, Denver's main train station. Unfortunately, it's nothing special. Inside there are cafes and restaurants.
I took a short break in Confluence Park at the Platte River and then went back to the car to drive to the hotel.
In total, I was on my feet for a good 8 hours today. And that will continue pretty much every day.
Tomorrow I'm off to Grand Junction and the Colorado National Monument.
